Our forum (whykuffar 2) is the target of a determined spammer who keeps attempting to register offensive usernames.

Now, he made 400 failed attempts at registering, which clutter the memberlist, and which have to be deleted one by one.

Is there a way to delete them en masse or, even better, to prevent him from attempting to register ? he always uses IP proxies, so I suppose banning his IPs is useless.

Thanks

giordano

You should run an ip whois search and then contact his ISP about this.

Thank you for the answer.

The spammer uses proxies like "hidemyass.com" etc

Is there any point in contacting such an organisation ?

Ia he using the same email or email service to register? You could ban the email domain or all free email domains for that matter.

He uses random e-mails such as xxx@ zzz.com .

Of course, he never manages to have his registrations authenticated, but his attempts (under offensive usernames) will show up on the forum start page as "last registered user", and will also clutter the Memberlist (at some point, with, say 2000-3000 identities, this may also perhaps cause software problems).

This gives our Members the impression that the forum is unsafe, and obviously it's also an incentive for the spammer to continue.

Is there any way to install "mods" to the phpbb software on mfbb, so as to deal with this problem ?

Thanks

G

Going through the memberlist for the support forum, it looks like the same problem exists here.

Hello admins

the problem I mentioned in this mail is still there, we get these registration attempts with offensive usernames... these never succeed, but the offensive username will show on the access page of the forum.

Ant way to avoid that ?

Thanks

Take a look at Disallow names in your admin panel.
